Institution is the one in South America to use the IBM cloud service

The Mãe de Deus Cancer Hospital, a reference in cancer treatment in the southern region of the country, located in Porto Alegre, will be the first health institution in South America to use artificial intelligence as a technological component to identify treatment options for cancer patients. The institution now relies on Watson for Oncology, a solution that provides physicians with alternatives based on worldwide scientific evidence. The cloud cognitive computing platform points out individualized treatments and oriented to the profile of each patient diagnosed with cancer.

In practice, the doctor will include the patient's clinical information in the system, with his/her history and test results. With this data, the solution will help you gather information specific to the patient's treatment. Watson for Oncology informs the relevance of each identified treatment and provides support links for each alternative, indicating to oncologists what treatment options, medications and possible side effects are, which offers a more personalized and productive care, increasing the time of treatment. interaction between doctor and patient. At the end of the process, the physician is responsible for making the best decision based on all this information generated by Watson for Oncology, and may also provide feedback regarding the content provided by the platform to assist in its development.

Watson for Oncology was initially trained by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Center (MSK) – one of the most important cancer research centers in the world, currently benefiting from a collaborative training process with hundreds of medical oncologists. The system is based on scientific evidence that is monthly updated and classified in order of relevance by physicians who use the platform worldwide. The collaborative solution has more than 15 million scientific content, including around 200 medical texts and 300 articles.

“One of the purposes of the Mãe de Deus Cancer Hospital is to offer its patients the full range of treatment alternatives possible. Watson for Oncology integrates with the work of our oncologists, enabling greater access to cured information and qualifying physicians' decisions”, says the director of the Mãe de Deus Cancer Hospital, Dr. Carlos Barrios.

The Watson for Oncology platform's learnability allows it to be continually improved with input from the oncologists who use it over time. In addition, it makes the doctor keep up to date on all the scientific evidence related to the specific case of the patient. Currently, about 50,000 oncology research papers are published each year. Studies estimate that the world's medical information will double every 73 days from 2020, making it almost impossible for any healthcare professional to keep up to date without the help of the cognitive platform.

"The intention is for Watson for Oncology to democratize access to the growing knowledge about cancer currently available", says Eduardo Cipriani, sales executive for IBM Watson Health in Brazil. It is an honor for us to work with healthcare organizations such as Mother of God Cancer Hospital, to empower oncologists and make medicine more participatory.
